From the Small Leagues to Ligue 1: How Education Created a Career in Analysis

2 Min Read

In 2019, Hudl, RBFA and the Belgian Pro League announced a world first agreement to provide a connected solution that powers analysis between leagues, clubs and the national team.

Aside from providing technology solutions to all levels of the game in Belgium, another key part of the deal is based on Education - upskilling the analysts of Belgium in using this new technology and providing ongoing support, with the goal being to raise the level of analysis across the country.

Nelson Morgado is a great example of the success of this Educational approach. Having started out his career in video analysis in 2019 at R.E Virton, in the second tier of the Belgian league pyramid, the timing was perfect for him to take advantage of the League-wide deal that was introduced that same year.

To kickstart the education process, analysts were invited to attend courses hosted by Hudl, where they could learn and collaborate knowledge together.

“We took a course in Tubize at the RBFA Headquarters and the courses have contributed to a better development and a better organization of my work,” said Morgado. “Their aim was to bring together all of the A and B analysts from Belgium. This project allowed us to get to know each other better. There were about thirty analysts and this also allows for easier discussion.”

In early 2021, this new level of knowledge and expertise led to a great career opportunity for Nelson to join the big leagues, landing a job as Video Analyst at AS Monaco.

“The partnership between Hudl and the Belgian Pro League allowed me to discover Hudl Sportscode for the first time in 2019,” said Morgado. “I was at Virton, in D1b of the Belgian League 2 Championship, and this allowed me to discover the program and to be more prepared for the high level. Today, at AS Monaco, we use the same easy-to-use and very practical software.

I previously had no specific training. I took part in a lot of seminars to try to enrich myself more in the tactical side of football.

The professional development was very enriching in the sense that during the course led by Luke Benstead, the Chief Analyst of the Belgian selection and Roberto Martinez, the coach, allowed us to enrich ourselves and to be more organized.”
